When Daddy is away...

is very quiet...

and the vacuum cleaner hangs out in the lounge for a few days without being tripped over and banished, small people eat french toast for dinner, have wobbly sad chins and need extra cuddles; the rubbish bin in the kitchen gets very full, my eyelids get very heavy and the nights are loud and heart-bangy.

But I have also today managed to beat my rebellious kitchen into some sort of pleasant order. 41/2 hours of sorting, tipping out, wiping down, grimacing at, stacking and shuffling resulted in 1) a sore back 2) crumb-free shelves 3) an overflowing wheelie bin 4) a humble but neat kitchen willing to meet prospective buyers.


Next up...the toy cupboard. Hold me back.

Peek a Boo


She is cottoning onto the concept of hiding and revealing. I love how the growing and grasping of stuff makes babies so happy. Simple delights become shrieking, consuming pleasure. She is seven months old and this stage for me is about sticky fingers, blowing food back at me, ribbons of soaking drool, contagious belly laughter, squeals of joy at her sisters, fat feet that don't know about standing yet, bath-time splashing and soggy rusks.

My helpers...


I have this love-hate relationship with these two. They are pertetually underfoot, permanently hungry and annoyingly fussy with food, scavenging anything left for two seconds on the bench, not to mention obsessed with sleeping in the baby's room and having a fondness for leaving chewn up (real life...well...once alive) mice strewn down the hallway. I sat down at the toy cupboard today to rummage through the dress up boxes to look for things to donate and no sooner had I begun when the boys came along and saucily jumped into a box each. Of course we began to dress them up and they did look a little like a modern take on Tom Kitten by Beatrix Potter, trailing lais, glitter wings and tinsel halos in their rush to escape our creative fashion efforts.
